How to Find Your Ring Size at Home (3 Easy Ways)

A ring that fits well is one you forget you are wearing. You do not need a jeweller to find your size — three simple methods at home are accurate enough, especially when you combine them.

Method 1: measure a ring that already fits (most accurate)

1. Choose a ring that fits the same finger you are buying for.
2. Lay it on a ruler and measure the inside diameter — from inner edge to inner edge, across the widest part — in millimetres.
3. Find the closest diameter in the chart below.

Method 2: the paper strip

1. Cut a thin strip of paper, about 5 mm wide and 10 cm long. Paper is better than string, which stretches.
2. Wrap it snugly around the base of your finger.
3. Mark where the paper overlaps, then lay it flat and measure the length in millimetres — that is your circumference.
4. Check that the strip also slides over your knuckle; if not, go by the knuckle.

Method 3: a printable ring sizer

Printable sizers work well if you print them at exactly 100% scale (check the test line with a ruler). Use one as a second opinion alongside method 1 or 2.

Mistakes to avoid

• Measuring cold fingers. Fingers shrink in air conditioning and swell in the heat. Measure at the end of the day at a comfortable temperature.
• Forgetting the knuckle. The ring has to pass over it.
• Using the wrong hand. Your dominant hand is usually slightly larger.
• Ignoring band width. Wide bands (6 mm and more, like many men's rings) feel tighter — go up half a size.

Between two sizes? Choose the larger one. A ring that is a little loose is comfortable; one that is too tight is not.

Sizing a surprise gift

• Borrow a ring they wear on the same finger for a few minutes and use method 1.
• Press the ring into a bar of soap to keep an impression, or slide it onto your own finger and mark where it stops.
• Ask a close friend or family member — they often know.
